SKM Defends Ed Sheeran Concert Plan Amid Criticism from CAP in Sikkim Political Controversy

A political controversy has emerged in Sikkim over plans to invite global music star Ed Sheeran for the state’s 50th statehood celebrations, with the ruling and opposition parties locked in a heated debate.

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) spokesperson Drougan Tamang defended the initiative, stating that hosting an artist of Ed Sheeran’s global stature would not only mark a significant milestone for Sikkim but also elevate the state as a premier cultural and economic destination.

The opposition Citizen Action Party-Sikkim (CAP) has criticized the proposal, claiming that it diverts attention from essential governance issues. In response, SKM dismissed these objections as “baseless,” highlighting the positive impact of international events like this one, which could generate employment opportunities and boost local businesses.

Tamang further emphasized that the opposition’s attempt to derail the plan through “petty politics” risks denying Sikkim the significant cultural and economic benefits that such an event could bring. He pointed to successful international concerts hosted by other northeastern states as examples of how such initiatives can be successful.

The Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-led government maintains that Sikkim has developed sufficient infrastructure to host high-profile events and that the concert aligns with their broader vision to establish Sikkim as a global cultural and tourism hub, alongside their continued focus on healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
