The Election Commission of India (ECI) has published the draft electoral rolls for three States and two Union Territories as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. This move ensures that voter lists are accurate and up to date ahead of upcoming elections.
Significant Updates Across States and UTs
The latest revision has led to the removal of a substantial number of names from voter lists:
-
West Bengal: Over 58 lakh names removed
-
Rajasthan: Nearly 42 lakh names removed
-
Goa: Approximately 10 lakh names removed
-
Puducherry: Just over 1 lakh names removed
-
Lakshadweep: Around 1,500 names removed
These updates aim to eliminate duplicate, obsolete, or invalid entries and enhance the integrity of the electoral process.
Importance of the Revision
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is part of the Election Commission’s efforts to maintain transparent and accurate electoral rolls. Citizens are encouraged to verify their names in the draft rolls and report any discrepancies. This ensures every eligible voter can participate in elections without facing issues due to outdated or incorrect data.
The publication of these revised rolls is crucial, particularly for West Bengal, which is preparing for its Assembly elections. Other States and Union Territories included in this revision are also expected to benefit from cleaner and more precise voter lists.
How to Check Electoral Details
Voters can access the draft rolls through official Election Commission portals or local election offices. Confirming voter details early helps prevent last-minute complications during elections and strengthens democratic participation.
