Michael Bracewell, the 34-year-old all-rounder and stand-in captain of New Zealand, believes the upcoming white-ball series in India is crucial for preparing the team for the February-March T20 World Cup.
Speaking at a Golf Day event in Mumbai on Tuesday, Bracewell highlighted the importance of playing in local conditions.
Adjusting to Indian Conditions Ahead of World Cup
“We are here to get used to the weather and local pitches, which will put us in a better position for the World Cup,” said Bracewell.
He added, “We have a big series ahead of us – the ODIs and T20Is – which will serve as vital preparation. Being in India early allows us to adapt to the conditions and plan our strategies effectively.”
The New Zealand squad will play three ODIs followed by five T20Is, beginning January 11 in Baroda.
Excited About Young Talent in the Squad
Bracewell expressed confidence in the younger players in the team. “We have some exciting new faces. Zak Foulkes, in particular, has impressed in recent performances. He is opening the bowling, swinging the ball late, and has already made a mark internationally. I’m eager to see him bowl in these Indian conditions,” said Bracewell.
The squad also features Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitch Hay, Kyle Jamieson, Henry Nicholls, and Adi Ashok, alongside stand-in captain Bracewell.
Golf Day Event Highlights Team Spirit
The Golf Day, organized by TCM Sports, included assistant coaches Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram, as well as Patrick Rata, New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India. The event provided a casual setting for players, staff, and officials to interact ahead of the series.
Looking Forward to the Series
Bracewell concluded, “Playing in India before the World Cup is an excellent opportunity to fine-tune our skills, understand pitch behaviour, and acclimatize to the climate. It is an important step for the team and the youngsters who are making their mark internationally.”
