Approval Needed for Resumption of Lakshadweep-Beypore Ferry Service, Vital for Economic Growth

The Lakshadweep-Beypore ferry service, suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, is pending approval from the Lakshadweep Administration for its resumption. Various organizations, trade associations, and regional bodies, including the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), have repeatedly urged the administration to restore this vital service.

Importance of the Ferry Service

According to CCCI Secretary Sirajudheen Ellathodi, residents of Lakshadweep have depended on the Beypore port for over 40 years for essential needs, such as medical visits, education, tourism, and daily supplies. The ferry service has played a crucial role in enhancing the economic growth of Kozhikode city, connecting it to Lakshadweep.

Concerns Over Vessel Safety

Recently, the CCCI submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum Suresh Gopi, addressing concerns raised by the Lakshadweep Administration about the draft required for the safe operation of major vessels like the MV Arabian Sea and MV Lakshadweep Sea. The administration claimed these vessels need a minimum draft of 3.5 meters, while the depth at the Beypore wharf is only 3.4 meters, making it unsafe for their operation.

However, the CCCI clarified that this depth limitation does not apply to high-speed vessels such as Cheriyapani, Valiapani, and Parali, which only require a draft of 2.3 meters. These vessels have successfully operated from Beypore for decades, as confirmed by port authorities.

Current Status and Future Prospects

Recent updates from the Directorate General of Shipping indicate that the 150-passenger capacity high-speed vessels (Cheriyapani, Valiapani, and Parali) have been repaired at Cochin Shipyard and are ready for service in the Kochi-Lakshadweep sector. The Beypore port is also equipped with a baggage scanner and metal detector, ensuring security levels comparable to those at Kochi port.

Mr. Ellathodi emphasized that resuming these ferry services would significantly benefit the Lakshadweep community, boost trade, and promote tourism, ultimately fostering socio-economic development in both Lakshadweep and Kozhikode.
