Wife Seeks Kerala High Court Investigation into Lakshadweep Man’s Disappearance from Police Custody

A woman from Lakshadweep, Abida, has petitioned the Kerala High Court seeking an investigation into the disappearance of her husband, Abdul Rahman, while he was in police custody. Rahman was taken into custody on October 9 in connection with a domestic dispute. The police claimed that he jumped into the sea and went missing, but Abida suspects foul play, citing Rahman’s experience as a diver, making it unlikely that he would drown.

According to Abida’s petition, Rahman was detained at the Chetlat police station in Lakshadweep on October 9, and the next day, the police informed her that he was transferred to a hospital due to an unstable condition. However, when Abida and her relatives went to the hospital, they could not find Rahman. On October 11, the police informed her that Rahman had allegedly jumped into the sea and was missing.

Abida believes that the story of him jumping into the sea is fabricated and that her husband was mistreated by the police while in custody. She requested the Kerala High Court to direct the Lakshadweep authorities to form a special investigation team to properly investigate the case. Abida emphasized her husband’s diving skills, stating that it was highly unlikely he would have drowned in the lagoon area of Chetlat Island.

The Kerala High Court bench, led by Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, has instructed the Lakshadweep administration and police to respond to the petition. The court has scheduled further consideration of the case for November 26.
