Kejriwal Submits Resignation
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently out on bail due to a corruption case related to the excise policy scam, resigned from his position on Tuesday. He submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena at the LG Secretariat, accompanied by his cabinet colleagues.
Atishi Set to Lead
Cabinet minister Atishi, who was chosen to succeed Kejriwal, staked her claim to form the next government in Delhi. With this appointment, Atishi becomes the third woman to hold the chief minister position in the city, following Congress’s Sheila Dikshit and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj. She will lead the government until the next Assembly elections scheduled for February 2025.
Kejriwal’s Unexpected Announcement
Kejriwal, who was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Friday, announced his resignation just two days later. He expressed his intention to return to the CM role only if voters certify his honesty.
Unanimous Support for Atishi
Atishi currently oversees several portfolios, including finance, education, and revenue. She played a crucial role during Kejriwal’s time in jail and was chosen as the next CM during a meeting of the AAP legislative party on Tuesday. Kejriwal proposed her name, which was unanimously approved by fellow MLAs.
Atishi Reflects on the Moment
Atishi shared her mixed emotions with the media, feeling both joy and sadness at Kejriwal’s resignation. She stated that she would work diligently to ensure Kejriwal’s return as chief minister after the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. “It’s possible only in the Aam Aadmi Party and under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal that a first-time politician has become a chief minister,” she noted, highlighting her humble background.
