Trump Adviser Warns India: US Tariffs Double Amid Russian Oil Dispute

US-India Trade Tensions Rise Over Tariffs and Russian Oil

Donald Trump’s top economic adviser has warned New Delhi that Washington will not soften tariffs unless India changes its stance on Russian crude oil imports.

Kevin Hassett, Director of the US National Economic Council, called the talks with India “complicated” and accused New Delhi of blocking access for American goods.

“If the Indians don’t budge, I don’t think President Trump will,” Hassett said.

US Hits Indian Imports with Record Tariffs

On Wednesday, the United States doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, the highest after Brazil. The increase includes a 25% extra duty tied to India’s purchase of Russian oil.

Hassett explained that Washington wants to pressure Russia and also push India to open its markets.

He compared the process to a marathon, saying trade talks need patience, a long-term view, and acceptance of ups and downs before reaching a final deal.

Trump’s Team on Negotiation Delays

Hassett’s warning followed remarks by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who blamed India for dragging talks.

“I thought we’d close a deal by May or June. India could have been one of the first. But they kept delaying us,” Bessent told Fox Business.

Still, he remained hopeful:

“India is the world’s largest democracy, and the US is the world’s largest economy. At the end of the day, I think we’ll come together.”

India’s Strong Response

India has pushed back firmly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he would “never compromise” on protecting farmers and national interests.

Officials estimated that the new tariffs will hit $48.2 billion worth of exports. They warned that higher duties could make exports to America unprofitable, which may lead to job losses and slower growth.

Despite the pressure, India said it is ready to stand firm and handle the economic challenges caused by Washington’s move.
