Sikkim Constructs Bailey Bridge in 6 Days to Boost Traffic Flow, Set for Dismantling Before Monsoon

Sikkim has successfully constructed a Bailey bridge in just six days in the Sangklang area of North Sikkim. Officially opened to the public, this 180-foot bridge aims to improve vehicular traffic in the Mangan district, significantly enhancing transportation of goods and access to essential services.

A Bailey bridge is a portable, prefabricated structure made of steel and wood, designed to be quickly assembled without heavy machinery. This bridge, with a load capacity of 24 tonnes, was built by Trishakti Sappers in partnership with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The bridge is expected to benefit the area until the summer, but it will be dismantled before the monsoon season to prevent damage from rising water levels. The initiative is part of Sikkim’s ongoing efforts to restore infrastructure in the wake of natural calamities, following the devastating flash floods of 2023 that damaged roads and bridges, including a notable 200-foot Bailey bridge over the Teesta River built by the Indian Army.

This Bailey bridge serves as a vital temporary solution, improving connectivity and offering much-needed relief to the people of North Sikkim.
