The Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) is set to enhance tourism in Lakshadweep by supplying alcoholic beverages, following the Kerala government’s new excise policy. This change allows Bevco to sell alcohol directly to the Lakshadweep administration for tourism purposes.
How the New Policy Supports Tourism
Harshita Attaluri, the Chairman and Managing Director of Bevco, explains that this new policy will help the corporation meet the alcohol demand of the island administration more efficiently. She added, “This approval will not only help us meet the demand on time but also increase our revenue.”
Under the policy, Bevco can only sell alcohol to a government agency designated by the Lakshadweep administration.
Successful Initial Sale to Lakshadweep
Last December, Bevco completed its first sale to Lakshadweep after receiving a special government sanction. The consignment was delivered to the Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports (Sports), which manages tourism on the islands. The order included:
- 215 cases of beer
- 39 cases of foreign-made foreign liquor (FMFL)
- 13 cases of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL)
This initial sale brought Rs 21 lakh in revenue. A source at Sports stated, “Bevco’s reputation for supplying quality liquor made it a trusted choice for us.”
Alcohol Sales Expected to Draw More Tourists
The Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports operates resorts on the islands of Kavaratti, Bangaram, and Minicoy. Although most visitors to the islands are families, alcohol availability is expected to attract more international events and tourists.
Tourism Season and Economic Impact
The tourism season in Lakshadweep runs from October to mid-May, with approximately 6,000 to 10,000 tourists visiting the islands. The introduction of alcohol sales will likely boost tourism numbers and support local businesses, benefiting the overall economy of the islands.
