Lakshadweep Emerges as a High-Potential Hub for Marine Fisheries and Exports

Lakshadweep Islands are showing immense potential for marine fisheries, particularly in tuna and tuna-like species, marine ornamental fish, and seaweeds, offering significant opportunities for export-driven growth, said Grinson George, Director of ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

However, he highlighted that the lack of a robust post-harvest ecosystem remains a key challenge in fully realizing this potential.

Strengthening Post-Harvest Infrastructure

Speaking at the recently concluded Matsya Mela in Kavaratti, George emphasized the need for modern cold storage and processing facilities across all 10 inhabited islands. These facilities would ensure:

  • Sashimi-grade tuna quality for international markets

  • Preservation of fish quality

  • Value addition

  • Seamless export logistics

He also stressed the importance of developing value chains for other commercially important fish species to diversify income sources and improve the resilience of local fisheries. Reliable scientific fish catch data is crucial for effective fisheries management and export strengthening.

Operational Solutions: Mother Vessel Proposal

Mohammed Althaf Hussain P P, President of the Androth Island Fishermen Cooperative Society, proposed the establishment of a state-of-the-art mother vessel. This floating hub would:

  • Collect fish from various islands

  • Provide immediate chilling and primary processing

  • Conduct grading and storage at sea

  • Reduce post-harvest losses

  • Support multi-day fishing trips

  • Bridge logistics between islanders and mainland markets

He also suggested a common branding strategy to unify all Lakshadweep seafood under a single premium identity, improving traceability and market positioning in global markets.

Emerging Opportunities: Ornamental Fish and Seaweed Cultivation

George highlighted alternative livelihood opportunities such as marine ornamental fish culture and trade. CMFRI has already established a marine ornamental fish hatchery in Lakshadweep to:

  • Promote sustainable production

  • Reduce pressure on natural coral reef ecosystems

  • Create new income opportunities for local communities

Seaweed cultivation was also identified as a high-growth sector. CMFRI plans to encourage the farming of native seaweed species, emphasizing eco-friendly practices and value-added product development.

Entrepreneurial Support and Policy Needs

Local entrepreneurs stressed the need for:

  • Improved fishing infrastructure

  • Comprehensive post-harvest facilities

  • Policy support for a thriving blue economy startup ecosystem

Mohammed Yaseen A P of FishCo, a start-up from Kiltan Island, highlighted the importance of:

  • Market integration

  • Access to technology

  • Skill development

  • Investment facilitation

These steps are essential to unlock Lakshadweep’s blue economy potential in a sustainable and inclusive way.

Conclusion

Lakshadweep’s marine fisheries, ornamental fish trade, and seaweed cultivation offer a promising avenue for export-led economic growth. With modern infrastructure, policy support, and entrepreneurial engagement, the islands can become a global hub for sustainable marine products, ensuring economic benefits and environmental conservation for the region.
